The Academie d'Escrime is the Junior Section of the Portsmouth and Southsea Fencing Club.
Why call it the Academie d'Escrime? Simple! Fencing is full of French terms, and Academie d'Escrime
just means "Fencing Academy". It's a place where you can learn fencing.
The Academie is part of the Portsmouth and Southsea Fencing Club. All coaching sessions are supervised by nationally qualified coaches.
Anybody over the age of 8 years can join but places are limited so there is sometimes a waiting list. At the age of 16 members are expected to train with the adults. There are more boys than girls, but not as many more as one might think. Generally girls and boys do equally well at fencing and compete on equal terms.
Once or twice a term, the Academie takes part in fencing competitions against other junior clubs in the region. Visits to county and national events are also arranged from time to time. Members are encouraged to attend as many of these events as they can. During the summer, fencing demonstrations are given at carnivals and shows.
Membership fees are paid quarterly.
WARNING - Fencing should never be tried unless supervised by a properly qualified coach and the correct clothing and equipment is used.
